Legends of Girona - Pt 8 "El cul de la Lleona"
Well, here I am again!
Now, I'm going to present to you the "Lleona de Girona" (the lioness), to be exact, the legend is about her ass!
El Cul de la Lleona
In front of the Sant Felix church, close to Onyar river, there's a little column with a lioness climbing on it. She might be the most famous Girona's animal, after the Sant Narcis's flies.
It's not sure about her origin, but some people say that she (and the column) is the remaining ruins of a very, very old hotel called "Hostal de la Leona", obviously not existent anymore. The original version of the lioness is in the Art Museum of Girona, the one on the street is a copy. This corner is not her former location, she was placed there after the hotel was destroyed.
But you might be wondering, "what's so special about this little lioness?"
It's because every visitor, who wants to show their respect and will to coming back to Girona, or live here, should KISS HER ASS as a sign of respect to the city!
Many tourists do that every day, depending on the season, even queue up for that, and do the famous touristic photo!
This is the last legend of our series of posts. I really hope they could bring you a good feeling about our city, that will be waiting for you with open arms! :*

Legends of Girona - Pt 7 "La Mayordoma"
Now, a legend! ;)
La Mayordoma
Many, many years ago, when the bishop came to Girona, he brought with him his housekeeper, who was an ancient 100 years old lady, immensely fat, and she used to wear very flashy coloured clothes and accessories, she was a very gossip and unpleasant woman, but she was a great cook and invented many delicious dishes. The things was that she happened to master the mystic and magical arts, but she used that for the evil!

The things was that she happened to master the mystic and magical arts, but she used that for the evil!
Every time
this woman walked on the street, everybody looked, due to her not very modest
clothing and behaviour. One of those days, she got so angry that she put a spell on all the churches in Girona with
huge spider webs with even bigger spiders on it, really huge spiders in every colour you can imagine!
After that,
Sant Narcís took all her power from her and turned her into the Jester of the
city. Until one day, she had a vision of the tragic death of Saint Narcís and Saint
Felix, and it really happened, since this happening, she became into a humble
woman and devoted her life to help the poor and weak people. Before she died,
she wanted to make another love gesture to show that she had really changed and
made a huge fire in front of the cathedral and prepared mint soup to all the
poor and sick people around.
After her
death, during her funeral, people were very surprised when they went to carry
her body and realised that she was lighter than a little bird!
So, what do you think of this legend?

Legends of Girona Pt 6 - The Eiffel Bridge and Movie "Perfume"
Hey everybody!
Today I'm not posting legends, but two interesting facts about Girona:
"Perfume - The story of a murderer"
Today I'm not posting legends, but two interesting facts about Girona:
Puente Eiffel
The “Eiffel Bridge”,officially called “Pont de les Peixateries Velles” or “Pont de
Ferro”,is one of the most special points of Girona due to its intense red colour
and modern design, and since is made out of iron, it looks like a lying mini
Eiffel Tower.
It was built by Gustave Eiffel, in 1876,
two years before the Eiffel Tower was made, and it represents a great progress
on the union betwen the old town and the new center of the capital of the
Girona province.
This bridge is one of the four bridges
that cross the Onyar river, being the most emblematic of all. It’s an obligatory
stop when you visit our city! For the bridge, that’s beautiful and for the view
to the cathedral that you have from there!
Not everybody know, but the movie "Perfume - The story of a Murderer" , from 2006, with the awesome actors Dustin Hoffman and Alan Hickman, was made here! The most important point of Girona showed in the movie is the "Pujada de Sant Domenic", it's a really beautiful spot of the city, where we are going to visit in our Girona day!

Legends of Girona - Pt 5 - Torlana
Hi everybody!!
So, we are very close now to the Camp!! I hope you are as excited about it as we are!! We are a little bit more than 2 weeks to go!
The legend for this week is a little bit scary, but I hope you like it...
Around the 14th century, Girona received many Jews people and they started a community here, called "Call". It was located in the neighbourhood that now we call "Barri Vell" (Catalan name for "Old neighbourhood".
Among all the Jews living here, there was this woman, very devoted to her faith and respected by her people, they used to call her Torlana. It's still not clear the origin of her name, but it's believed to be related to Torana or follower of Torah.
One night, her body was found beheaded at the Gironella Tower, and until now, nobody knows the responsible for this terrible crime. It's not sure whether the crime was done by a Jew or a Christian. The reasons are also unknown.
In the Jewish museum, in the courtyard ,there used to be a female head made out of bronze , in honour to this beloved woman, but it's not there anymore.
It's said and believed by many people, that if you walk in the Old Center at night, you might hear a woman's voice singing. You can't identify where is the sound coming from, because it seems to be coming from everywhere...as if she was still wandering through the quarter...

Legends of Girona - Pt4 El Tarlá
Hey guys
and girls!
This week
I'm bringing two versions of the same story. Which one do you
prefer?
Today I'm telling you the story of the “Tarlá”.
Version 1
The 28th
of August used to be the day when people celebrated the San Augustín day, and
it was a huge party, with a lot of traditional and special moments. Each year,
one person was elected to be the responsible and guardian of the image of the
saint. They used to make some kind of procession, bringing the saint from the
house of his guardian towards the Sant Feliu church, and then the party
started. On a stage prepared for this event, there was a contest to decide who
would be the king of the party, called “Tarlá”, which means “Crazy”. So, you
can imagine the kind of performance they presented back then. He had as a
mission, bringing laughter and happiness everywhere he went, for the whole
period of the festivity. When the "craziest" Tarlá was chosen, he was treated like an actual king! He had this kind of special car, where he sat on, and made this march through the city. On the next morning , the actual Saint’s day, there was a religious solemnity and then the Tarlá went to visit the houses of the neighbors in order to collect the money spent to prepare the party. After that, they went back to this big saloon where delicious food was served, and some people did sardanas (traditional Catalan dance) presentations while the Tarlá was watching and at the same time entertaining the people by making his crazy and funny stuff.
Version 2
(The best one!)
(Not trying to make your mind, but this version of the story is really great!)Many years ago, around the 19th century, a very severe plague had reached this region. People were all very sick and unable to leave their houses for weeks and weeks. The Argentería street was one of the saddest areas and the most affected by the plague.
Since the disease was so bad, people were isolated in quarantine, and the street was closed with some iron bars so nobody could pass.
Among all
that depressing environment, there was one of the neighbors , who was a very cheerful
and funny guy, who decided to try to distract people from all the disease and happiness,
so he was making crazy and funny things to make people laugh, even hanging
himself on the iron bars so people could see him and forget, at least for a
brief moment about all the problems.
A lot of families come with their kids every time the Tarlá/Xato is hanging on Argentería street,so they can control the puppet and make him spin around the iron bar while they’re singing “Viva el Xato!”
I hope you
liked at least one of the stories! See you next week for more legends!

Legends Of Girona Pt 3- The witch of the Cathedral and The Girl of Constitution Square
Today, we are going to tell you two stories: the first about The Witch of the Cathedral, and the second about The Girl of Constitution Square.
The Witch of The Cathedral
Once upon a time, many many years ago, there used to live in Girona, a very bitter and mean woman, who was known as a witch. She devoted herself to the practice of black magic and the hate towards all the other people but herself. She used to fly around on her broom cursing at people and throwing rocks at them!
But one day, she was flying around the cathedral doing her favorite thing: cursing and hurting people with her rocks, when a very deep and loud voice was heard by everybody. The voice said “Rocks you throw, rock you will remain!”. At this moment, the witch was turned into stone ! She was placed as a gargoyle (the only human-shaped gargoyle on the cathedral’s walls) on the Carlomagno’s Tower.
She was put faced down, so she would never see the sky again, and used as a gargoyle so water would always pass through her mouth in order to clean it, since she was such a dirty mouthed witch!
The Girl of Constitution Square
This one is not exactly a legend, but a very interesting fact.
At the Constitution Square (Plaza de la Constituición) there’s a statue of a lovely little girl sitting there all by herself watching every step of the day-to-day life.
Her name is María del Mar Cabeza Catalán, and the reason of the tribute is that she was the only girl born in Girona on December, 6th of 1978, the day when the first democratic constitution was enacted, just after the end of Franco’s dictatorship.
The original Project was to make the statue of María del Mar Cabeza Catalán, when she was 4 years old, based on a model made by the sculptor from Madrid Francisco Lópes, but it turned out that so many years passed since the idea of the Project , that the model wasn’t good anymore and the artist concluded his work based on a photo, when María was already 12 years old.
This art piece attracts tourists every day, everybody wants to take a photo of/with the girl.

Legends of Girona , Pt 2 - "Sant Narcis and the Flies"
Hello
Winter Campers!!
As the second part of our series about the Legends of Gerona , we are going to tell you the one that might be the most famous story : The Legend of Sant Narcís and the Flies.
As the second part of our series about the Legends of Gerona , we are going to tell you the one that might be the most famous story : The Legend of Sant Narcís and the Flies.
It’s been
said that in September of 1286, the current French king, accompanied by a
massive army, decided to invade Gerona. Since the army was so big, Gerona’s citizens
had no other choice but surrender.
They were
acting really disrespectful towards the city: stealing all the goods from
honest people, destroying monuments and churches, including the Sant Felix’s
church , where Sant Narcis was buried.
But something unexpected was about to happen… From Sant Narci’s tomb started to
come out millions of flies, but not just regular flies, they were huge!! Some
say there were as big as a horse head, and poisonous, and they attacked the
army and their horses, killing most of them, including their king!! The ones
who survived were so scared that they ran back to France.
We hope you like the story, see you next week for more Legends Of Gerona!
